Import Restrictions

There are certain goods which cannot be imported without authority, such as a licence or a permit. Senders should determine import restrictions from the country's authorities before posting:

  • animal products
  • bees
  • cheese
  • grain
  • insecticides
  • leeches
  • liquor
  • parasites
  • plants
  • rice
  • silkworms
  • tobacco products
  • weapons
  • yeast.

Further details regarding restrictions on the importation of agricultural products can be obtained from the Director of Animal Health and Production. The regulations on importing meat and meat products change frequently. The following consumer goods may be imported for private use, without an import permit provided that they do not exceed the maximum allowable quantities.

Red meat/goat/lamb 25 kg per family

Poultry meat 5 kg per person

Tinned poultry meat 20 kg per person

Eggs 36 eggs per person

Fresh milk 2 litres per person

Maize and products 25 kg per person

Wheat 25 kg per person

Pulses (beans, peas) 25 kg per person

Sorghum products 25 kg per person

Cabbage 1 bag per person

Onions 1 bag per person

Potatoes 1 bag per person

Oranges 1 bag per person

Tomatoes 1 bag per person

Choumollier 1 bag per person

Rape 1 bag per person

Prohibited Items

Certain goods are prohibited or restricted to protect public health, domestic plant and animal life or the environment. It is not possible to list all prohibited and restricted goods. If you are in doubt whether the importation of other goods is prohibited or restricted, please contact a customs office in Botswana.

In addition to items considered non-mailable matter, the following are prohibited:

  • airline ticket issue
  • antiques
  • bee-keeping appliances, used
  • credit cards
  • fruit
  • furniture
  • honey
  • ice, in any form
  • indecent or obscene material such as pornographic books, films, videos, DVDs and software.
  • jewellery
  • military firearms, ammunition and explosives
  • narcotic, habit forming drugs and related substances in any form
  • passports
  • prison-made goods
  • publications or items relating to sexual stimulants or the curing of venereal diseases
  • royal jelly
  • seeds
  • watches
  • x-rays.

Commercial goods mailed to Botswana must include an invoice. Permits are not required for bona fide gifts not exceeding R10 in value and 5 kg in weight.
